How to Store Your Seasonal Clothes to Prevent Damage

Switching out your wardrobe each season is exciting—but if you don’t store your clothes properly, they can get ruined. I’ve learned a few tricks over the years that actually work.

How to Store Your Seasonal Clothes to Prevent Damage

1. Clean Everything First

Never put dirty clothes away. Even a tiny stain attracts moths or causes yellowing. I learned this the hard way when an old sweater came back with spots—ugh.

2. Fold or Hang Wisely

Heavy sweaters? Fold them to avoid stretching. Dresses and coats? Hang them on padded hangers to keep shape. I always mix and match depending on the item.

3. Use Storage Bins or Vacuum Bags

Plastic bins with lids keep dust and pests out. Vacuum bags save space—but I don’t recommend them for delicate fabrics. I have a couple of bins for winter coats and scarves, and they last perfectly.

4. Add Protection

Mothballs, cedar blocks, or lavender sachets keep pests away and add a fresh scent. I love lavender—it smells amazing and actually works!

5. Store in a Cool, Dry Place

Attics and basements? Sometimes tricky. Moisture can ruin fabrics. I try to keep my bins in closets or under the bed—dry and temperature-stable areas are best.

6. Rotate Seasonally

Bring items out early in the season to check for damage. I usually go through my summer clothes a week before spring—makes sure everything is ready to wear.

My Takeaway:
Storing seasonal clothes properly isn’t hard—it just takes a bit of planning. Clean, fold or hang smartly, protect from pests, and pick the right spot. Honestly, once you do this, your clothes look brand new every season.
